2020 and 2021 have brought more tests than can be imagined to our families and community. Many of our regular activities, such as Fourth of July parade and booth and Spring Earth Day creek cleanup, were canceled due to COVID 19. However, thanks to Zoom meetings and limited socially-distanced, masked volunteer groups we were able to accomplish quite a lot during the past year. Listed below are some of the many highlights:
- We continue to work with the City of Orinda on a Restoration Plan for San Pablo Creek as it flows from Chevron to Safeway (downtown Orinda). Our work includes commenting on the Downtown Precise Plan to assure the Restoration project is addressed and most recently, working with the City's newest consultant, WorkPlace, who has been hired to specifically work on the integration of the Creek with the Downtown businesses.
- We are still actively fund raising for further design for our "new", restored Creek, and we will be working with the City to raise grant funding for the actual construction of the project.
- The SP 201 barrier dam located just upstream from the Bear Creek Road bridge (adjacent to the Wagner Ranch Nature area) continues to flow freely, clear of debris, thanks to our work with EBMUD.
- FOC is actively working with PG&E, the Moraga Orinda Fire Department (MOFD), Fish & Wildlife (CDFW), the Water Quality Board (SFBRWQCB) and the California Native Plant Society (CNPS) to restore the existing banks of San Pablo Creek along Camino Pablo adjacent to the Village downtown which was decimated by the clear cutting of trees and brush for "fire control".
- FOC continues to work with The Watershed Project and Spawners to regularly monitor the health of our creeks in terms of macroinvertebrates (bugs) and water quality for the benefit of our current and future fish population.
- And we continue to work with our community answering questions and concerns related to Orinda creek issues.
Your tax deductible donations are essential to helping us further these projects as well as continue our community outreach and education. Members are invited to our semi-annual creek clean-up days and kept informed of our progress in the community. You can visit our website at orindacreeks.org for more information.
